¶ What it is
An Interview Guideline lays out the structure of your interview and consists of what you will say and ask in the interview. It is a guideline for the interviewer.
¶ Why it is useful
The Interview Guideline helps you to interview according to your research plan. In addition, it ensures that you follow a specific structure across all the interviews so that results are comparable, allowing you to generate valuable insights.
¶ When to use it
It would be best if you prepared an Interview Guideline every time you conduct an interview-based inquiry with a customer or a group. A script serves as a guideline to ensure consistency throughout your interview process.
¶ How is it done
- Determine the structure of your interview.
- Introduction: Provide context about the interview’s purpose and why the interviewee’s insights can be helpful. Ask for consent to record the interview and take pictures.
- Background and demographics: Ask them to introduce themselves, focusing on relevant background information to your study.
- Interview Core: Inquire about the research questions you need to have answered.
- Outro: Say thank you and ask for anything else the interviewee would like to share.
- Formulate what you will say and ask in each section of the interview. Make sure your questions address what you want to find out about the interviewee and their thoughts and opinions.

Do's
- Write the guideline in whole sentences and write out everything you want to say and ask.
- Visually outline the structure of the interview in your script so you can see where you are and what comes next in the discussion.
- Use the script as a reference or reminder of what you want to find out in the interview.
- Be ready to rephrase your questions if something is unclear to the interviewee.
Don't
- You don’t have to read the script word for word in the interview, and it is just a guide. If you find something interesting taking place in an interview, but your script does not cover it, explore it anyway and pursue fruitful new lines of conversation.
