¶ Visioning & Goal Setting
¶ What it is
This is the first step of starting a project/building a product. Visioning is the process whereby we confirm and align our future direction and communicate them with the team. The vision is where we want to be and what we want to achieve. At the same time, goals are set as specific targets that move you toward your vision.
¶ Why it is useful
Only with clear goals and a clear vision can we set up a project team and structure that will be effective. It also helps stakeholders to re-evaluate and confirm the current plans. You can only produce results by having clear objectives.
¶ When to use it
This tool must be applied when building a product, setting up a project, or reshaping our strategy.
¶ The difference between Vision & Goals
A vision is the desired future, the North Star, of the whole team/department/company. It defines where we want to be in the long term. It aligns with company values, stage of development, capability, and market directions. Visions should be large and idealistic to motivate teams and give them purpose.
Goals are milestones created to support us in achieving our vision. SMART principles help to set more precise and better goals for the team. Goals are shorter-term and very clear in how they can be achieved.
The primary difference between a vision and a goal is the timeframe for which it is formulated, the clarity with which it is defined, and the outcome's measurability.
- Tip
We can set up a vision not only on the whole company level but individual departments or project teams can also have a vision (which should align somewhat with the company vision).
¶ How is it done
- Bring all key stakeholders together and start to explore the following questions (including, but not limited to):
Exploring The Vision (company/department/team level)
- What are our core values?
- What is the problem we are addressing?
- Who is affected by the problem or insufficiency?
- What do we offer, and how can we address the problem?
- How would the world look if we eliminated the problem?
- How can we make this vision connected with the team?
Exploring Goals
- What do we want to achieve in the next 1-2 years?
- What concrete outcomes/numbers can indicate our success? (Sales, marketing, customers, churn rate, etc.)
- How are our goals aligned with our business strategy and vision?
- Collect everyone’s ideas and cluster them into different categories
- Start the discussion and prioritise what our top three priorities are and reach alignment between all stakeholders
- Send over the selected and finalised visions/goals and review them again during/after the project
