¶ How Might We’s
¶ What it is
“How Might We…?” questions are a key ideation tool that helps spark new and creative ideas. To generate them, we try to turn challenges and pain points that we know customers are facing into a force for innovation by asking how we might address them. The “How” asks for practical ideas, the “Might” is a call to be positive and optimistic, and the “We” is an invitation for collaboration.
¶ Why it is useful
Turning opportunities, challenges, and pain points into “How Might We …?” questions unleashes the problem-solving and ideation power of the team by moving them from the problem space to the solution space. The questions frame the solution space and direct the team's attention and focus.
¶ When to use it
This tool should be used in any ideation or brainstorming session when we want to generate new ideas and approaches to solving a particular problem or outcome.
¶ How is it done
- Pick an opportunity statement and look at all the relevant challenges, pains, and opportunities within that space.
- Challenge the team to think of ways to turn those into “How Might We …?” questions, generating as many HMWs as possible.
- Cluster and eliminate duplicate HMWs.
- Select, either by executive decision or in a vote, the top HMW questions to move forward with and ideate on.
¶ Do's & Don't
Do's
- If the team still needs to do HMWs, explain and give examples of how one problem can spark many different HMW questions. Examples help inspire action!
- Go for quantity in getting as many HMWs as possible before narrowing it down.
- Select HMWs that go in different directions to ensure divergent ideation that sparks many new ideas.
Don't
- Don’t simply turn a problem 1:1 into an HMW statement; try understanding the problem and finding different ways to formulate an innovation challenge.
